We hosted our very first virtual plastic awareness workshop on 8th March 2022.
Starting with a presentation on what are plastics and why it’s harmful to our environmentand to us, we led a group based discussion about what the community can do and howthey can use One Tide as a platform to tackle plastic pollution.
We split up into two discussion groups and talked about the top challenges each personfaces as a community in Qatar when tackling plastic waste. Breaking down the challenges,we dived into each of them with hopeful solutions to tackle them as a community.
1. What are the top challenges facing plastic in Qatar?
• The amount of single-use plastics being used in the F&B industry, especiallyordering food online.
• The amount of single-use plastics being used in the retail industry. Lots ofunnecessary use of plastic such as bags, wraps and other packaging items.
• Lack of recycling points and bins around the community.
• Lack of awareness in Qatar on the plastic waste problem. is not where it should be.
2. How can we come together #ASONETIDE to tackle these challenges?
• Education - not just in schools but across the community to create widespreadawareness so that we can work together on the issue with more events, clean ups, talks, educational content.
• Working together - Bringing all different stakeholders together, individuals, businesses and government to be part of the community and further influencerothers to untie against plastic pollution.
• Community ambassadors - Have key ambassadors be the spirit speaking on behalfof the community to create a movement of change and elevate the communityvoices! Community ambassadors can also drive campaigns such as pledges andpetitions to act on change on the ground.
• Households - recycling initiatives including incentives and accessibility to recyclingbins. Working with administration to roll out such campaigns.
